Go and Make

Week 1: Because of Jesus

I can go.

One-phrase summary: All authority belongs to Jesus, so we can go and share our story with confidence, even when we don't feel qualified.

Pray that people in your group would feel the pressure lift as they realise the mission rests on the authority of Jesus, not on their own ability, and that each person would see their own story as something God can use.

Read together before the video

Before playing the video, ask someone in the group to read the series passage out loud.

"Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'"

Discussion

Q1 What makes you feel like you can't share Jesus with others? Be honest, there are no wrong answers here.

Q2 Ps Steve said the Great Commission starts with a "therefore". Because Jesus has all authority, the pressure is on Him, not on us. How does that change the way you think about sharing your faith?

Q3 Think about your story in three parts: what life was like before, how you met Jesus, and what has happened since. What has Jesus done, or what is He doing right now, that you could easily tell someone about? Remember, a gentle and gradual story is just as powerful as a dramatic one.

Q4 How could our eGroup become a place where sharing our stories and encouraging each other to share Jesus becomes normal?

Guided prayer

"Jesus, thank You that all authority belongs to You. Thank You that the pressure is on You and not on us. Give us courage to open our mouths and simply tell people what You have done in our lives. Holy Spirit, take our simple words and use them to open eyes and change hearts. Amen."

Week 2: As You Go

I can live on mission where I am.

One-phrase summary: We don't need to wait for the perfect moment. We can make disciples in the everyday places and relationships God has already given us.

Pray that people would start to see their family, workplace, friendships and daily routines as their mission field, and that they would notice the people God has already placed around them.

Spend a couple of minutes before playing this week's content asking if anyone had a chance to share a piece of their story since last week. Celebrate every attempt, big or small.

Discussion

Q1 Who are the people God has already placed around you? Think about your family, your work, your friends and your neighbourhood.

Q2 Ps Peter said we don't need to be far ahead of someone to help them, just a little bit ahead. He also talked about building respect by being good at what we do, and building trust by serving people. Where in your life do you have the most influence right now, and what could that look like there?

Q3 Some opportunities are long-term (families, workplaces) and some are short-term (a conversation on a train or a flight). Which of these feels more natural for you, and which one stretches you?

Q4 What is one practical way you could bring Jesus into your world this week? And how could our eGroup help us live on mission beyond the group?

Guided prayer

"Father, thank You for the people You have already placed around us. Open our eyes to see our homes, workplaces and daily routines as places where You are at work. Help us to be people others can trust and respect, and give us courage to take the opportunities You put in front of us. Amen."

Week 3: The Power of an Invitation

I can invite someone towards Jesus.

One-phrase summary: A simple invitation can be the beginning of someone's journey with Jesus.

Pray that people would remember the invitation that brought them to Jesus and to this group, that fear of rejection would lose its grip, and that God would bring specific names to mind.

Spend a couple of minutes before playing this week's content asking where people noticed opportunities to represent Jesus in their everyday world this week.

Discussion

Q1 Who invited you to church, to an eGroup or to Jesus? What difference has that one invitation made in your life?

Q2 What makes inviting someone to church or talking about Jesus difficult for you?

Q3 Liz talked about the friends who carried their paralysed friend to Jesus and broke through a roof to get him there. She also said an invitation doesn't have to start with church. It can start with a coffee, a run or a Christmas service. What is the difference between inviting someone to an event and inviting someone into a journey with Jesus?

Q4 Who is someone you could invite into your world? What could we do as an eGroup to make it easier for new people to feel welcome and find friends here?

Guided prayer

"Jesus, thank You for the invitation that brought each of us to You. Take away our fear of rejection and fill us with Your love for people. Show us who needs an invitation this week, and give us the courage and kindness to ask. We trust You with the response. Amen."

Week 4: Make Disciples

I can help someone follow Jesus.

One-phrase summary: Discipleship is a lifelong journey of becoming more like Jesus, and it happens best in community.

Pray that people would see discipleship as a journey rather than a course to finish, that the group would grow as a safe community where real life can be shared, and that each person would recognise someone they could walk alongside.

Spend a couple of minutes before playing this week's content asking if anyone invited someone to something this week and what happened.

This episode features a conversation between Ps Jeziel Koehler and Ps Mark Collard (about 13 minutes). Watch the full video together, then move into the discussion questions below.

Discussion

Q1 Who has helped you on your journey of following Jesus? What did they do that made a difference?

Q2 Ps Mark said there is no finish line in discipleship. What season do you think you are currently in with Jesus, and who might be a little ahead of you who could help you through it?

Q3 He also said we can be inspired and taught on our own, but we can't be discipled in isolation. Sometimes even the moments when people annoy or offend us become discipleship moments. Why do you think community matters so much for growing as a disciple?

Q4 Who is someone in your life you could help take their next step? What would it look like for our eGroup to be a place where everyone is both being discipled and helping someone else grow?

Guided prayer

"Jesus, thank You for the people who have walked with us and helped us become more like You. Make us humble enough to learn from others, and generous enough to help someone else take their next step. Holy Spirit, give us Your wisdom and sensitivity as we walk alongside people. Amen."

Week 5: Next Steps

I can keep following Jesus and help others do the same.

One-phrase summary: Following Jesus is never meant to stand still. There is always a next step, and for many of us, that step is water baptism.

Pray that every person would recognise their next step with Jesus, that anyone not been baptised would find the courage, and that the group would keep encouraging long after the series ends.

Spend a couple of minutes before playing this week's content asking if anyone had a moment this week of helping someone grow, or being helped by someone a little further ahead.

This episode features a conversation between Ps Jeziel Koehler and Ps Monica Collard (about 11 minutes). Watch the full video together, then move into the discussion questions below.

Discussion

Q1 Ps Monica shared that she wasn't baptised for a long time simply because no one had ever asked her. So let's ask: have you been baptised? If not, is there a reason?

Q2 What questions or fears might stop someone from taking the step of baptism? How does it help to see baptism as a step of following Jesus as Lord, not a sign that we have it all together?

Q3 Why is it important that we don't stay in the same place spiritually? What do you think God is asking you to take as your next step? It might be baptism, the Equip course, Empower Your Foundations, joining an eTeam, or simply reading your Bible and praying a few minutes each day.

Q4 How can our eGroup help one another take our next steps and make sure nobody is left doing the journey alone?

Guided prayer

"Jesus, thank You that following You is never boring and never finished. Thank You that You knew everything about us before You called us, and You still chose us. Give us courage to take our next step, and help us to walk with one another so that nobody does this journey alone. Amen."

Testimonies

Q1 Looking back over the whole Go & Make series, what has shifted in the way you think about sharing your faith, inviting people or making disciples?

Q2 Is there a story from these five weeks, a conversation, an invitation or a step you took, that you would like to share with the group?
