KEY THOUGHT:
This week we are going to look at the freedom Christ secured for us, and how to stay free. Sometimes we come to know and experience the freedom of salvation but then after a little while, if we are not careful, we can turn to doing things in our own strength and our own way again. We will look at these questions: What does a free me look like? Could we be more bound than we are willing to acknowledge? We want the biproducts of what freedom produces in our life, but are we willing to do the things we need to do find freedom?

KEY VERSES:

Galatians 5:1 NIV
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”

Galatians 5:13 MSG
“It is absolutely clear that God has called you to a free life. Just make sure that you don’t use this freedom as an excuse to do whatever you want to do and destroy your freedom.”

Question 1: What are some of the byproducts of living free? What does a free you look like?

Question 2: Once you have found freedom in Christ, what are some of the things that begin to burden you and cause you to feel bound again?

Question 3: Freedom is a one time gift (the moment of salvation) — and a process. How do you walk out your freedom?

Question 4: One of the ways you know that you are free is through worship. You are created for worship. How free are you to worship?

Question 5: How will your freedom affect generations to come?

PRAY:
Spend some time thanking God together…
- thank Him for the freedom Jesus secured for you
- thank Him for His help and empowerment in walking out this freedom
- thank Him for the fruit and biproducts that freedom is producing in your life
- thank Him for the affect this freedom will have for generations to come

KEY THOUGHT:
Oftentimes we find we are still bound because we are searching for identity. But the good news of salvation is that we are loved and accepted already. Our identity is based on who we are, not on what we do. Jesus was not setting us free to do whatever we wanted; He was liberating us to walk in relationship with God and to restore us to be the kind of people He created us to be.

INTRO QUESTION:
What have you learnt in the last week through the Sunday sermons or daily devotions that has stood out to you?

KEY VERSE:

2 Corinthians 5:21
"God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God."

Question 1: What truths, words or labels have you grown up with that you now wrongly believe about yourself?

Question 2: Oftentimes we find our identity in what we do. What are the ‘Once I….” statements you say to yourself? ie: “Once I graduate…” or “Once I get that job…”?

Question 3: What are the “works” or “your own efforts” you fall into to try and earn your position with God?

Question 4: Remember back and share how your new life in Christ began. What freedom did you experience in the beginning? What did you learn about who you are at that point of salvation?

Question 5: How does knowing our identity affect our freedom?

PRAY FOR EACH OTHER:
— thank Jesus for your salvation
— pray that you will come to know and live from your identity in Christ
— break off any words or labels
— speak words of life and truth about our identity (from God’s word) over each other

PRACTICAL:
Share with another member of your eGroup an area where you felt challenged from today’s topic, and make a commitment to encourage each other this week as you decide to make a change in that area.

KEY THOUGHT:
We will never know true freedom until we are willing to be vulnerable and honest about where we are at. When Jesus comes and sets you free — you don't have to hide anymore! You can now enjoy a healthy relationship with your Father and He actually encourages it. James 4:8 says “Come near to God and he will come near to you.” This is the essence of what Christ has freed you to. If we walk in the light, we go to another level of relationship.

INTRO QUESTION:
What have you learnt in the last week through the Sunday sermons or daily devotions that has stood out to you?

KEY VERSE:

Psalm 51:6
“You desire truth in the innermost being.”

Question 1: How easy is it for you to be honest and vulnerable before God? What is stopping you from intimacy with Christ?

Question 2: What are some of the areas God has revealed and brought freedom to as you have drawn near to Him?

Question 3: How do we know if we are being honestly open before God, or if we are deceiving ourselves?

Question 4: Who are some open and honest people, that are living free, that you admire?

Question 5: What is hindering you from being free in relationship with others?

Question 6: There is freedom when we are okay with failing. What area do you need more courage to launch out in?

PRAY FOR EACHOTHER:
— the ability to draw nearer to God
— to overcome fears in being vulnerable and honest before Him
— freedom in all of your relationships
— courage to launch out

KEY THOUGHT:
God has an inheritance for us. An inheritance of joy, of fulfilled promise, and of freedom. This inheritance comes from our relationship with God. The wilderness that the Israelites experienced was about a spiritual detox from dependence on other things. God wanted them to be solely dependent on Him, so they could enter promise. God didn’t just save them from Egypt. He saved them to lead them into the promised land.

INTRO QUESTION:
What have you learnt in the last week through the Sunday sermons or daily devotions that has stood out to you?

KEY VERSE:

Colossians 1:12-14
“He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to his people, who live in the light. For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.”

Question 1: We know what we are saved from, but what are we saved to? What are some of the promises of God?

Question 2: What is the purpose of our inheritance, of what God has promised to us?

Question 3: Take a moment to reflect on your physical heritage in comparison to your spiritual inheritance? Can you explain the difference?

Question 4: Galatians 5:13 says “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” How can we use our freedom to serve others?

Question 5: Are there areas in your life that God has revealed to you during this study that were bound and not in freedom? Does anyone have any testimonies to share of some newfound freedom?

PRAY FOR EACHOTHER:
Pray together that God would cause us to all live as FREE PEOPLE in 2024, and to help others find this freedom.

GALATIANS 5:1

It is for
freedom
that Christ
has set
us free.

At the start of every year we lean in and learn together, right across New Zealand. This year our desire and prayer is that we would live unrestricted. The Bible teaches that freedom is not found in limitless choices and boundaries. It is something that God has already secured for us through Jesus.

Galatians 5:1 says “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.”

Our prayer is that this 4 week study leads you to answer some of these questions: What does a free you look like? How can you invite God to search you and know you? Could we be more bound than we are willing to acknowledge? We want the biproducts of what freedom produces in our life, but are we willing to do the things we need to do find freedom?

Freedom is a one time gift — and a process. The moment we come to Jesus Christ, He gives us freedom through the Holy Spirit so that we are no longer slaves to sin. We are free in Christ. But that freedom is something we need to learn to walk out. We need to train ourselves to respond differently than in the past, both in our actions and in our thought lives.

To get the most out of this study, can
we encourage you to get involved in an eGroup this month, dive into the daily readings and journal as you go, attend church each Sunday to hear the Word preached, and pray fervently for a significant year for us all - individually and collectively – as we live as FREE PEOPLE.

We are praying for you.

Blessings,
Ps Sam and Kathy Monk
